(LANSING) - Hunters in Southern Michigan are getting a few extra days to deer hunt.
The Michigan Department of Natural Resources says the late antlerless firearm deer season started January 2 and will run until January 11. This late hunting opportunity is open in St. Joseph, Cass, Branch and Hillsdale Counties.
The cost for a deer tag in the extended season is just $5. The DNR says hunters may harvest up to 10 antlerless deer only during this extra hunting period, with one deer allowed per valid kill tag.
Several license types are eligible for use, including unused single deer licenses, deer combo licenses, and universal antlerless deer licenses.
DNR officials say the late antlerless season is designed to help reduce deer populations, limit the spread of disease, reduce ecological damage, and lower the number of vehicle-deer crashes in the region.
More information about the extended season and licensing requirements is available online at the Michigan DNR Website.
