(STURGIS) – Sturgis Public Schools will once again bring a millage request to the voters.
On February 27, residents in the Sturgis School District defeated a mileage proposal with 1,002 No votes and 868 Yes votes. If approved the proposal would have allowed Sturgis Public Schools to collect up to 3 mills per year until 2034 which would give them the ability to get the full 18 mills they are due on non homestead properties.
During Monday’s Sturgis Board of Education Study Session, Superintendent Dr. Art Ebert shared some of the feedback he heard following the request being voted down. LINKC.
Ebert shared that the next available election date to bring the matter back to the voters would be August 6. The date to have ballot language approved and submitted would be April 30.
After several minutes of discussion, the Board of Education voted unanimously to have the millage request appear on the August 6 ballot, and again ask for 3 mills. In addition, the Board will discuss more ways of reaching out to the public with information on this request to clear up any questions for the public.
