(DOWAGIAC) – Authorities have identified a person of interest in a murder investigation.

Dowagiac Police Chief Steven Grinnewald says his department was called to the area of Clay Street near Halstead Street around 9:20 PM Saturday after a call came in of shots fired.

Officers arrived and from their investigation determined there had been a verbal altercation between two subjects at a party. During that altercation, a gun was pulled out and several shots were fired. Some of the bullets struck the victim, a 19 year old man from Benton Harbor.

The victim was taken by friends to an area hospital, where he died from his injuries. His name has not yet been released.

Police have identified a person of interest in the shooting, 24 year old Demorrio Lowes of Cassopolis.
