(INDIANAPOLIS) – Harvest season is upon us, and the Indiana State Police want to remind motorists to be careful as you travel.
Bruce Kettler, Director of the Indiana State Department Of Agriculture says with the harvest season underway, more slow-moving agricultural equipment will be traveling on Indiana's rural roads and highways. ISP is asking everyone to stay alert and be courteous so we all get home safely.
Kettler says slow moving farm equipment typically travels at 25 MPH or less, so motorists are asked to exercise caution when approaching them. Farm equipment during the harvest season could include tractors, grain carts, combines, grain wagons and large trucks hauling agricultural products. In addition to the slower speeds, these vehicles many take up most of the road.
If you are traveling behind farm equipment, be patient, and be careful when passing. Avoid tailgating because farm equipment might have to make sudden stops or make a left turn. Farmers will pull over when they are able to let motorists pass, but it may take time for them to find a safe place to do so.
In 2019 in Indiana, farm equipment vehicles, other than trucks, were involved in three accidents with one fatality. That's according to the National Highway Traffic Administration.
