(PENN TOWNSHIP) – A South Bend man was injured in a one vehicle crash over the weekend.
According to the Cass County Sheriff's Department, 22 year old Jesus A. Martinez of South Bend was driving north on Decatur Road near Dutch Settlement Road in Penn Township at 8:45 AM Sunday. Martinez went off the roadway and struck a tree, which caused the vehicle to catch on fire.
The owner of a nearby property helped Martinez get out of his automobile. Martinez was then taken to Elkhart General Hospital for treatment of his injuries. The Penn Township Fire Department put out the vehicle fire.
Deputies say intoxicating substances may have been a factor in the crash. It's still not known if Martinez was wearing his seatbelt, or if airbags in the vehicle deployed due to the fire.
Assisting deputies on scene were Pride Care Ambulance and Cass County Animal Control. The crash remains under investigation.
