(ANGOLA) – Steuben County Commissioners want to be part of future talks about relocating a casino.
During Monday’s meeting, the Commission unanimously approved a motion to continue gathering information and to have further discussions on the topic.
Last week a state commissioned report, released by the Indiana Gaming Commission, said that Auburn in DeKalb County, has been tapped as one of two optimal locations for relocating the failing Rising Star Casino. The report was prepared as mandated by Senate Enrolled Act 43.
Steuben County Commission President Wil Howard says that any nearby casino will have an impact on Steuben County residents, and that learning about the good and bad of such a plan is important.
Commissioners instructed Steuben County Economic Development Director Isaac Lee and County Tourism Bureau Executive Director June Julien to start collecting more information and report back during the next Commission meeting.
The State report says an Auburn-area casino would generate $204.3 million in revenue and $61.1 million in tax dollars each year.
State Senator Tyler Johnson, who represents most of Auburn, is opposed to relocating a casino to Auburn. He publicly criticized the report saying it ignores risks to families, schools and public safety.
The Rising Star Casino is currently located in Rising Sun, Indiana, which is 40 miles from Cincinnati.
