(EMMETT TOWNSHIP) – A member of the Trine University Men’s basketball team was killed in a crash Wednesday night.
Michigan State Police from the Marshall Post were called to I-94 near Mile Marker 104 in Calhoun County’s Emmitt Township just after 10 PM Wednesday. They determined that the driver of the vehicle, 22 year old Fred Garland of Detroit, was dead.
Garland was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash, which is still under investigation. It’s believed weather conditions were a factor in the accident. Garland was the sole occupant of the vehicle.
The Trine men’s basketball team posted Thursday “We love you Fred! You are forever a champion in more ways than #1!” on their X page, formally known as Twitter.
Garland was in his second year at Trine. The point guard transferred to the University with his brother Cortez from Albion College.
Assisting Michigan State Police were Emmitt Township Public Safety, the Nottawaseppi Huron Band of the Potawatami Police and Life Care Ambulance.
