New People Elected To Sturgis City Commission

(STURGIS) -There will be two new members to the Sturgis City Commission when they meet next week.

On Tuesday, voters chose to have Daniel Boring represent Precinct 2 for a partial term on the Commission. He received 388 votes (92.1%). There were 33 write in votes.

In Precinct 4, Cathi Abbs was elected to the seat previously held by Bob Hile. Abbs, the former Executive Director of the Sturgis Area Chamber of Commerce, received 631 votes (96.6%). There were also 20 write in votes cast (3.07%).

The lone contested race on the City Commission was for a seat in Precinct 1. Incumbent Commissioner Rick Bir defeated Steve Shevick 587-385 (58.8% to 38.62%). There were also 25 write in votes cast.

The other seat in Precinct 2 had no candidate listed on the ballot. Incumbent Commissioner Emmanuel Nieves and Roger Moyer were Write In candidates for the position. There were 117 votes cast as Write Ins. Sturgis City Clerk Ken Rhodes says they will not know who the winner is until the St. Joseph County Board of Canvassers goes through the ballots and certifies them.

Incumbent Precinct 3 Commissioner Marvin Smith was re-elected with 391 votes (94.9%) cast. There were 21 write in votes as well (5.1%).

At Large Commissioner Aaron Miller will continue to serve on the City Commission, receiving 2,536 votes (97.05%). There were also 77 write in votes cast (2.95%).

All of the newly elected Commissioners will be sworn in during the City’s Organizational Meeting on November 11.
