(MICHIGAN CITY) – The State of Indiana has executed a prisoner for the first time in 15 years.
The Indiana Department of Corrections released a statement saying they executed convicted murderer Joseph Corcoran early Wednesday morning. The process started just after 1 AM at the Indiana State Prison in Michigan City. Corcoran was pronounced dead at 1:44 AM. His last words were “Not really. Let’s get this over with”.
Corcoran was found guilty and sentenced for the 1997 murders of his brother James Corcoran, his sister’s fiance Robert Turner, and two of their friends, Timothy Bricker and Douglass Stillwell in Fort Wayne.
Indiana Governor Eric Holcomb issued a statement on the execution. Holcomb says “Joseph Corcoran’s case has been reviewed repeatedly over the last 25 years, including 7 times by the Indiana Supreme Court and 3 times by the U.S. Supreme Court, the most recent of which was tonight”. Holcomb says “Corcoran’s sentence has never been overturned and was carried out as ordered by the court”.
The last execution in Indiana was in 2009 when Matthew Wrinkles was put to death for killing his wife, her brother and sister-in-law in 1994.
