(UNDATED) – Officials are saying damage around St. Joseph County from Sunday’s storms was done by straight line winds.
The National Weather Service has been doing assessments around Southern Michigan and Northern Indiana following the storms that moved through late Sunday afternoon. At the present time, they says the damage is inconclusive as to whether a tornado did touch down in the County.
More review is scheduled to take place over the next few days.
St. Joseph County Sheriff Chad Spence says his office and St. Joseph County Emergency Management teams are working with NOAA officials in doing the assessments around the county, trying to determine the full extent of the damage and to ensure the safety of residents in the affected areas.
Spence says the hardest hit communities include Sturgis and Three Rivers, where reports indicated significant structural damage, downed power lines and debris blocked roadways.
NOAA officials say an EF-1 tornado did touch down and travel two miles through Edwardsburg. It had peak winds of 100 MPH, and started in a field west of Conrad Road and moved towards Edwardsburg Primary School, causing damage.
