(UNDATED) – Authorities say that a tornado touched down in Steuben County Sunday.
The National Weather Service has been doing assessments around Northern Indiana and Southern Michigan following the storms. Officials say an EF-1 tornado touched down at 5:28 PM Sunday north of Little Turkey Lake and moved northeast to near Long Lake in southern Steuben County. The track was 5.7 miles and 100 yards wide. The estimated peak wind was 90 MPH.
The tornado caused extensive tree damage and structural damage. A trailer northeast of Long Lake was shifted off its foundation and rolled, injuring one person.
National Weather Service officials say straight line winds are responsible for damage in LaGrange and Elkhart Counties.
The winds were between 60 MPH and 80 MPH and led to widespread damage, including downed trees, branches and power lines. Some of the trees and power lines snapped off and fell onto vehicles or homes.
In LaGrange County, several buildings were damaged, and trees came down during the storm. Reports of roofs coming off were widespread around the county.
In Elkhart County over 30 buildings and residences have been damaged by falling trees. Structural damage to homes, barns and businesses occurred in locations that saw the strongest winds, with roofs being blown off or seriously damaged. Buildings or barns collapsed as well.
Two other tornadoes touched down in Northern Indiana. An EF-1 tornado was reported in Noble County between Ege and LaOtto. It did damage to numerous large trees and a barn. The tornado was on the ground for two minutes and had peak winds of 90 MPH.
Another EF-1 tornado traveled just over 3 miles from near Oak Grove in Starke County to just north of Donaldson in Marshal County. Peak winds were at 110 MPH. The tornado caused damage to the campus of Ancilla College, along with overturning a mobile home and flattened barns and snapped several trees.
