(STURGIS) – Three new members of the Sturgis City Commission were sworn in Wednesday night.
Daniel Boring, Rodger Moyer and Cathi Abbs assumed their seats on the Commission after taking their oaths.
Moyer will represent Precinct 2, after defeating incumbent Commissioner Emmanuel Nieves 27-10 in the General Election. Both were write in candidates.
Moyer spoke with Swick Broadcasting and says he has lived in Sturgis for 26 years and has been involved with many committees. He was asked to run a couple of years ago but the timing wasn’t right. He says now he can serves and looks forward to being on the Commission.
Boring will represent Precinct 2 for a partial term. He ran unopposed and received 388 votes. Boring says he has owned several businesses and wants to use his background and experience to help Sturgis keep growing.
In Precinct 4, Abbs was elected to the seat previously held by Bob Hile. Abbs, the former Executive Director of the Sturgis Area Chamber of Commerce, received 631 votes.
Abbs says she never thought she would be a Sturgis City Commissioner, despite being asked several times in the past. She says as Chamber Director it would have been a conflict of interest. Now that she’s retired, Abbs says she is ready to serve.
Incumbent Precinct 3 Commissioner Marvin Smith was re-elected with 391 votes, as was At Large Commissioner Aaron Miller with 2,536 votes. Both Smith and Miller also took their oaths Wednesday night.
